November 30, 2016: Advent Calendar Eve!!
Here’s how we’ll be doing this…none of our bottles in the advent are labelled, so, should our member’s choose, they could do this whole advent calendar blind…something that I don’t think has been done before in the modern whisky advent era (I heard of a club that tried this back during prohibition..).
I really think blind whisky tasting is the best way to improve you nose and palate, BUT, should member’s decide to wait..I’ll be posting the information of each whisky at some point during the day on this here blog.
Member’s will add their own tasting notes on our Facebook page and I will be transferring those over to this blog when time permits.
Each day, with the whisky info, I will also be posting links to different Youtube videos. Usually the video is about the distillery of that day’s whisky but there are some other good ones in there, as well.
Please feel free to post your own thoughts and tasting notes if you have tried any of these whiskies before. If it’s one that the club really likes…go buy a bottle for yourself as an early Christmas gift and let us know what you think!
Until tomorrow, enjoy ‘Christmas in Hollis’ by Run DMC!
November 28, 2016: 3 more sleeps!
In preparation for our advent calendar and what I hope will be some fantastic tasting notes from the club, here is a 6 minute video of Charles MacLean talking about how to take tasting notes:

November 25, 2016: 6 more sleeps!
The whiskies for our inaugural advent calendar come from many different cask types that, depending on size, char levels, and previous spirit, will have a very different effect on the final flavour profile. Here is a short video of Charlie MacLean explaining different cask types. (Via: SingleMaltTv)
Tomorrow, we’ll post a video of Mr. MacLean explaining how the casks mature the spirit.
November 24, 2016: Most of us grew up with chocolate advent calendars, but when and where did the tradition start? Here is a brief history of the advent calendar. (Click the link)
November 23, 2016: 8 more sleeps! As part of our daily advent blog, we’ll also be posting videos to correspond with each whisky. Usually it will be a video about the distillery itself but there are some different ones, as well. Today’s video is a short 5 minute video summarizing how whisky is made. There are lots of these out there but I think this is the best one…

November 22, 2016: 9 days until December 1st. Now is a good time to learn how to drink whisky properly (well at least according to Richard Patterson). Here is “How to drink whisky like a sir”. It’s quite funny.
November 21, 2016:
We are inching closer to December 1st and the first whisky in our homemade whisky advent calendar. A lot of people have asked me how to get a hold of one of these calendars and how we set them up. Here are the answers to said questions:
- You can’t buy them. We made these calendars on our own and we aren’t selling them or making any profit off of them. The amount of work it took to make 22 of these things makes me almost 100% certain we won’t be making any more. Sorry! You can still buy high quality whisky advent calendars in stores so check with your local whisky shop if you want one! I know that Kensington Wine Market in Calgary, Alberta makes their own and it sells for $400.
2. How did we make them? The idea came from one of our members, Tom, who simply messaged me one day (probably while listening to some obscure record and thinking deeply about things) and said “why don’t we make our own advent calendar?” It really just snowballed from there. First, we sourced out the actual wooden calendars from Grey Ghost Woodwork in Edmonton, AB. Then we bought 550 1oz sample bottles from Richards Packaging in Edmonton, as well (Keep it local!). Last but not least we bought 25 bottles of whisky. We made 22 calendars total and we’ll be able to re-use the bottles and wooden advent for years to come. Pretty simple really.
If you are considering doing this within your own club, feel free to email or message us and I can give you more details. [email protected]
Starting December 1st we will be posting the daily whisky info on this page. The bottles are only numbered (not labeled) so we are encouraging members to sample the whisky blind for a truly unique whisky advemt experience.
We have taken another big step as a club. The little whisky club that could has created our very own whisky advent calendar!! As we get closer to December 1st, we will update this blog with a little bit of background information on how we put this thing together.
Once December 1st comes…we will be updating this blog every day (hopefully) with the whisky for that day along with ‘tasting notes’ from members of the club and some info about the whisky and the distillery. If you have never read our tasting notes before, just know that these are not your standard tasting notes and will probably give you no insight, whatsoever, into the whisky itself…but hopefully you will be entertained.
For now, we sit and patiently wait for December 1st to come….
